Movie Review: 'Snatched'

'Snatched' tells the story of mother-daughter duo, Linda and Emily Middleton - played by Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer respectively - who discover through a series of unfortunate events that they're not as different as they thought.

The film does well in setting up the characters in it's first moments with Emily (Schumer) getting fired from her job and dumped by her boyfriend and Linda (Hawn) feeding her cats and locking all her doors before heading to bed. Enough said.

It is here, when Emily is abandoned by her (ex-)boyfriend on their upcoming, non-refundable trip to Ecuador that she has the sad realization that none of her friends will go with her in his place. She eventually persuades her mother to join her on her luxury trip to Ecuador, encouraging her to live a little.

You're probably familiar with the rest: Emily meets a man who lures the pair away to be kidnapped and taken to Columbia as we follow their adventures while they escape and return home.

To be honest with you, I was definitely reluctant to see this movie. Chick-flick comedies are not usually my thing, but I'll tell you now, I was glad I went.

Although I may be a little young to be considered a fan of Goldie Hawn, I am, and it was good to see her return to the silver screen. I will add, as well, that she also kept moments together at times when it felt like Schumer's desperate act for laughs was about to fall apart.

I've never been much of a fan of Amy Schumer and it's completely unjustified; I think this was the first of her films I'd ever seen. So I was actually impressed. She was genuinely funny at times. The script was a little loose in moments but it was in Schumer's delivery that highlighted it's intended humour.

Of course, there were parts that I look back on now and think, 'that was really dumb', but at the time, I was laughing along with the rest of the cinema.

The film ends with both characters having endured, experienced and learned something from the whole ordeal and each other and shows them a year later in Kuala Lumpar having the time of their lives and a little bit wiser. 

'Snatched' really makes you want to go home and hug your mum and maybe never travel again.
